Starting the Hand: The Blinds and the Deal
These forced bets are called the "Blinds," and they are posted by the two players sitting immediately to the left of the Dealer Button.

These are your "Hole Cards," and they are for your eyes only; they are the only cards that differentiate your hand from the rest of the table.

After everyone receives their two hole cards, the first round of betting begins, known as the "Pre-Flop" phase.

To stay in the hand and see the next cards, every player must put an equal amount of chips into the pot.
How the Community Cards Change the Game
The dealer will eventually place five cards face up in the center of the table; these cards are shared by every active player in the hand.

Suddenly, you have five cards to work with (your two hole cards plus the three on the board), allowing you to see the potential strength of your hand.

Once this betting round is complete, the dealer reveals the fourth community card, known as the "Turn" (or Fourth Street).

The Showdown: Determining the Winner
The first way is to bet aggressively enough that every single opponent folds their cards before the final betting round is over.

The dealer then evaluates the hands and awards the massive pile of chips in the center to the player holding the highest-ranking five-card poker hand.

You can construct your final five-card hand using both of your hole cards and three community cards, one hole card and four community cards, or even just "playing the board" (using all five community cards if they form the best hand).
